Rev. John P. McGarry, SJ, '80

After he graduated from Loyola, Fr. McGarry spent a year at Gonzaga University in Spokane and then entered the Jesuits.  He received a BA in Philosophy and English from Gonzaga University, an M.Div from Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley and a M.A. in Education in Private School Education from the University of San Francisco.  Fr. McGarry has worked in high school ministry for many years.  He worked at Brophy College Prep in Phoenix as teacher and Director of Campus Ministry, Loyola High School in Los Angeles as teacher and Director of Campus Ministry, and Jesuit High School in Sacramento where he served as an assistant principal and as principal.  In 2005, he was appointed to a six year term as provincial of the California Province of the Society of Jesus.  Currently, he serves as Rector of the Jesuit Community at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley.  In addition, he serves on several boards of educational institutions including Loyola.  “Loyola is a place where I came to know God, myself and others more deeply.”
