FRESHMAN COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENT OVERVIEW

Class of 2020

Welcome to Loyola High School!  Over the course of your high school career, you will have the opportunity to participate in many educational and extracurricular activities.  Community service is an essential part of the Loyola High School educational experience.  You will be required to participate in a community service project during each of your four years at Loyola.  It is our goal that through these projects you will gain awareness, make a connection to the community, and discover how you can work towards making a positive impact in the world.

The Freshman Community Service Project focuses on one key activity, the High School Placement Test Prep Tutoring Program for 8th Graders, also known as the HSPT-8 Tutoring Program.  There are six Saturday morning sessions that make up the HSPT-8 Tutoring Program.  All members of the freshman class are required to take part in this program by volunteering for a minimum of two-HSPT-8 program sessions.  While two sessions are required, we do encourage volunteering for additional sessions.

The HSPT-8 Program is offered free of charge to over six-hundred  eighth grader students from under-resourced inner city schools and is made possible due to the generosity of the Loyola Community.  The HSPT-8 Program provides tutoring in mathematics, English and interview skills.  This is a team effort that includes Loyola students, parents, faculty/staff and alumni volunteers working towards a common goal of enhancing the educational opportunities of the participating 8th grade students.  Your role will be to serve as a tutor for the 8th grade students enrolled in this program.

During the week prior to the first tutoring session, you will be expected to attend a mandatory orientation meeting.  This meeting will assist in preparing you to be an effective tutor.  Specific dates and times of for this mandatory orientation meeting will be announced in the Daily Bulletin.

Please refer to the HSPT-8 Tutoring dates and times listed below.  Along with your parents, review the dates that will work with your schedule, making sure to check your extracurricular and/or personal calendar for any possible conflicts.
