Gary Gatfield Memorial Scholarship

“The Lord said E=mc2 and then there was Light.”
For 44 years, Gary Gatfield was more than a Physics teacher and Assistant Principal; he was Loyola’s steady hand at the tiller. From 1977 until his retirement in 2021, Gary didn’t just teach us how the world works—he taught us how to move through it with grace, faith, and precision.
Whether he was breaking down complex equations in the classroom or catching the wind on his Hobie Cat, Gary lived by a simple truth: “You may not be able to change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust your sails.” He saw his students not just as pupils, but as the “answers of our future.” He spent four decades ensuring that every student who walked our halls left with the tools to find their own true course, no matter which way the wind was blowing.
